PIER 24

Square Footage: 28,000
Value: $15 Million
Role: Development & Construction Management

Pier 24, located directly under the Bay Bridge on the Embarcadero, is the home of the Pilara Family Foundation’s photography collection. The 28,000 square foot former cargo warehouse was renovated into a world-class center to store, view, discuss, look at, and think about photography. The building is part of the Embarcadero National Register Historic District and the renovation was performed in conformance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation. The pile supported pier, which was partially condemned, was repaired and structurally upgraded and all new building systems we installed. Constant temperature and humidity control are required in order to preserve the photography collection.

The building retains its warehouse aesthetic (concrete floors, original wooden truss work and beams exposed) but allows photographs to be exhibited in a museum quality setting. The open office area (private office and meeting space located on the north end of the pier) is one of the most dramatic waterfront spaces on the bay.
